Darley Away
Darley away was the venue for week fourteen of the season and after a day of heavy rain on Friday it was a miracle the game was still on, Sherman won the toss and invited Darley to bat first on a soft soggy wicket which looked a slow bowler’s paradise.
The usual suspects opened up the bowling attack with Winton charging down the hill from the Village End and Laves crawling up the hill from the Wellington End.Darley made a steady start with the pitch playing true and straight and Rice made his intentions known swinging wildly at Laves on several occasions, Blubbs almost got the breakthrough early on when Rice swished outside off stump edging a catch to Splinter at second slip, it was an all too familiar cry from Laves when the catch went to ground and the ball raced off to the boundary.
Several appeals later finally saw Winton break up the openers and Bird was in the hut, leg before for ten and Darley were forty for one in the fourteenth over. Sherman brought himself into the attack in the sixteenth over after Laves finished his first spell of the day, Winton picked up his second when another appeal for leg before went the visitor’s way and Darley were fifty nine for two with twenty over’s gone and the visitors looked on top.
Winton struck again five over’s later with Darley only managing to add a further three runs to the score, Rice finally slogging at one too many and over went the sticks and Darley were three down.
Darley put up some resistance with the number four and five at the crease, Winton finished his twelve and Splinter was on at the village end, the run rate slowed up and finally Sherman finally bamboozled Hainsworth with a slow swinging pie, up the ball went, straight to Angry and Sherman was hoping last week was out of his mind as the "crisp bag" floated slowly into his hands and Darley had lost wicket number four with ninety five on the board.
Another partnership slowly started to dent the visitor’s morale as Furniss and Milne started to pile on the runs, Splinter was under attack from the Darley number six and the visitors seemed to be frequently climbing the fence to retrieve the ball. "Have one more" said Sherman after Splinter had just been battered for thirteen. Winton decided thirteen was definitely and unlucky number, especially for Splinter and he decided Splinter was off and Gobby would take the next over in place of the now less than jovial joiner.
Gobby also felt the brunt of Milnes bat as the Darley six continued his onslaught of the Blubberhouses bowling, Gobby finally broke up a ninety five run partnership and Laves took his first catch of the season to remove Furniss for forty nine.
Laves came back on at the Wellington End, hoping to rip up the tail enders, unfortunately the tail had other ideas, Milne having no problem dispatching the "Pigeon Killer" over the pavilion for six, Sherman packed the legside, Laves in a fit of rage questioned the captains tactics even though ball after ball went over the legside boundary and the home side passed the two hundred mark.
Gobby finally removed Milne for fifty six and Laves breathed a sigh of relief, next over it was Laves who picked up a wicket, a rare occasion as Bupa Boy held on to a catch at mid-on and Darley two hundred and three for seven.
Laves finished his twelve and Gobby finished his five with Sherman bowling the penultimate over of the innings, a slow full toss winged its way down the track a big swing from Hayton and the ball soared out of the field and through the washhouse window of a nearby house, the crowd went wild. Sherman un-phased by the situation skittled Hayton next ball and Darley were eight down with ten balls to go.
Tichie had the honours of bowling the last over and after a tidy six deliveries Darley had finished their innings on two hundred and forty two for eight and Blubbs had a big run chase on.
Bupa and Angry got the Blubbs inning's underway, disaster struck early on in the second over, Bupa cleaned up neck and crop and at three for one it was a less than ideal start for the visitors.
Gobby had risen through the ranks at three this week and after a shaky start soon settled into the game and along Angry the partnership started to grow, steadily passing fifty.
With eighty five on the board things were looking good, then as if by magic the pack of cards started to fall, Gobby caught for thirty, closely followed by the Show Pony eleven runs later for two and Arnie for another duck of the season six runs later and Blubbs were struggling at one hundred for four.
Laves was the new man in and a lot now rested on this partnership if Blubbs wanted to get anywhere near the Darley total, Angry passed another half century and was looking in top form, Darley didn't look like getting him out, Laves did! A quick drop and run from call from Laves, Angry leaning on his bat like a couNcil worker on his shovel had little chance to make the ground, despite the keeper knocking the bails off before the ball had reached him Angry was adjudged run out and at one twenty nine for five Blubbs were once again strugglling to chase down a score.
Bungle was the new man in and after last week was out to prove he should be at number six, quickly outscoring Laves, Laves decided he wasn't to be out scored and after planting his foot down the track, played a great slog sweep over the pavilion, the only thing wrong with the shot was he'd forgotten to hit the ball and Blubbs had lost another wicket with still another ninety four needed for victory.
Tichie joined Bungle and put on another twelve before Tichie skied one to square leg and it was one sixty one for seven and even the batting point looked out of sight with still ten over's to go.
Butch joined Bungle and gave the visitors some hope, pushing the score up to one ninety three when Bungle became the eight wicket to fall missing a straight delivery which he'd eyed up to go over long on for six.
Sherman took the number ten position, joining Butch in the middle, "No point going for the point" were Wintons words of wisdom as Butch clattered one over the hut for six and Blubbs were looking for eleven an over with three over's to go. A wild swing from Butch and with nine down for two hundred and nine the game slipped away.
Splinter was the last man in for Blubbs and with thirty one required from the last over it wasn't looking good; a dot ball from the first delivery and it was all over but still a point was better that none. Delivery number two zipped down the track at Splinter who froze like a startled rabbit in a cars headlights, a rap of the pads, up went the appeal and it was game over, no points from the day and another August like last year could see Blubbs treading water in the bottom half of the table.
Points: Darley 6, Blubberhouses 0
Fielding Points: Bupa Boy, Bungle
Fact of the Day: When dealing with the female of the species, sometimes "No" does mean "Yes" and "Yes" does mean "No", when Laves calls "Yes" for a quick single that actually means "Goodbye you've got no chance of making this run!"
