Burnt Yates Home
Burnt Yates were the visitors to The Brennan Oval on a very hot summers day, and the inevitable happened. The captain in charge of the coin toss lost, and blubbs were set to spend the next 3 hours in the sun. With Frankie unavailable, Bungle returned to the team.
Winton and Laves opened the bowling, and had what appeared to be a steady start until Robinson disposed of the new ball, lofting a 6off Laves into the river just 2 overs in. An unhappy Winton trapped Turnball LBW playing across the line the following over and Yates were 15-1. Laves thought he had his man when Robinson lofted a catch straight to Bupa, but some expert goalkeeping skills saw the ball tipped over the bar, over the fence, into the river and spare number 2 required.
With the score on 60, Connor was out, bowled. “Well bowled Macca” cheered Captain Sherman, Captain Angry broke out a smile and Captain Winton was delighted with his bowling change. Bubba finished his over and Sherman slumped to the boundary, bemused.
Bubba’s lip drooped lower and lower as Best took 4 fours off the first 5 balls of his next over, but Bubba got his man, Best playing on for 21, and Yates was 94-3. Sherman replaced Bubba and took the wicket of Winwood, skying the ball to the show pony at mid off.
Green joined Robinson and the pair took the attack to the bowling. Some big hits and 3 more spare balls later, Robinson reached his century and Laves returned to the attack. After a pigeon killer delivery reached Butch “The Microphone” Maltas on the full, Laves got Robinson, who picked out Bubba at long off and Yates were 208-5. Two overs later and Laves cleaned up Green for 36 and Blubbs were looking to keep the score below 240. Winton returned, and clean bowled Kelly and Wilson, both for 2 in consecutive overs and the bowling point looked to be on. Bubba replaced Winton to bowl the final 2 overs from the clubhouse end, and Whitehead decided to attack. Clever fielding from Laves saw a run out off the last ball, throwing the ball past the bowler to Bupa to invite a second run, and Whitehead was runout for 20, with Yates finishing up on 245-9.
Winton and Angry made their way to the crease, keen to get off to a good start. The runs were flowing at a steady rate until Angry played round a straight one and was bowled for 20. Bubba joined Winton and the runs continued. Bubba set to even out the lost ball counter by dispatching a 6 into the river. Winton passed his half century and Yates changed the bowling round in an attempt to break the partnership. Yates brought on youngster Whitehead to buy a wicket. Bubba watched carefully and took a single. Winton sent a full toss over the mower shed. Butch “Microphone” Maltas decided there would be a wicket next ball; Winton obliged, and the show pony was out, bowled for 91.
Arnie joined Bubba and the pair took the score to 212, Bubba passing his 3rd half century of the season, before Arnie chipped one to mid off and Blubbs were 3 down, still needing 34 to win. As Laves very slowly padded up, a prediction of 1st ball from black widow Maltas saw Bupa walking back to the hut, bowled and Bungle making way to the crease. 212-4 became 216-5 as Bungle edged Conner to the keeper for 1, facing 2 of the 3 deliveries allowed by the black widow.
Splinter strode out to the crease and things were looking tense until a few boundaries from one over from Bubba took the score to 238 with 8 overs to go. “I bet Tim’s out this over” said Maltas and Splinter missed a straight one from Law. Laves eventually walked out after a long time padding up and rumours of Bubba’s score floated round. With 5 required to win, the Stig of the dump hit a 4, and Bubba was on strike next over. Under belief a ton was still possible, the field was set back, and Laves refused to let Bubba take a single, much to Uncle Peter’s fury. Eventually word got out Bubba only had 93, so the single was taken and Blubbs had victory.
Points: Blubberhouses 5, Burnt Yates 1
Fact of the day: 4 predictions, 4 blubbs players out, just another reason to try keep Butch quiet.
