Burnt Yates Away
A new season brought new changes at the club, as the 2008 season fizzled out Stonewall had crumbled like the walls of Jericho under the sounds of Angry's horn and Sherman found himself new commander in chief for the 2009 season, hoping to pick up the pieces and turn around the club.
Yates won the toss and decided to give Sherman the headache of working out his first batting order of the season. It was Angry and the newly rebuilt Stonewall who took to the crease to commence the days play.
Tight bowling from the Burnt Yates bowlers meant Blubbs got off to a steady but solid start and Stonewalls confidence grew as the score moved along to twenty three. A momentary lapse from Stonewall and the slightest of edges meant Stonewall was on his way back to the hut for nine, no complaint, no moaning the crowd were stunned as the ex-captain slumped off the field.
Bubba kept his number three spot under the new regime and strode out to the middle to join Angry without a worry in the world, oh except that Sarah was now alone to dream of Cookie, Luke and the new overseas due to land some time soon.
It wasn't long before Angry knocked up his first fifty of the season as the score passed the hundred mark and Sherman started to relax a little.
The score moved on to one hundred and thirteen when Bubba was next to depart, just two short of his first half century of the year he was upset to come so close but yet so far but that was all soon forgotten when he saw Sarah the scorer admiringly watching him trudge off the field.
Newly promoted Bupa boy took up the number four slot, a slow start was soon forgotten after he opened up the throttle crashing successive boundaries and the score raced along to one sixty nine before he became victim number three bowled by Law for sixteen.
Dicko decided rugby was not for him this year and graced the field at five with the over’s ticking away, a brief innings came to an end when Wilson had him caught for one.
With less than ten over’s to go Sherman decided it was time for Mad Frankie to wield the willow and in he went at six, only eight more runs were added before Angry's splendid innings of ninety two finally came to an end, Wilson trapping him leg before and Bungle took to the field.
Bungle was next to go, bowled by Wilson for one and Blubbs looked in danger of conceding the batting point with the score one ninety six for six.
A captain’s innings was required from Sherman, sadly Sherman had forgotten who was captain and a mighty swish saw the stumps tumble once more and it was two hundred and five for seven.
Gobby Bobby went in nine joining Frankie for the last two over’s and it was tense moments as the pair added another five runs, Gobby finally bowled for three on the last delivery of the Blubberhouses innings, setting Yates two hundred and eleven for victory.
After the tea interval and a short mumbled team talk from Sherman it was Mad Frankie and Gobby Bobby who opened up the attack, Frankie received a less than welcome start from Robinson who spanked him round the field for sixteen in the first over and things looked bleak after only one over.
Gobby made a good start at the other end beating the outside edge several times in his first over and Sherman was convinced the tide was turning.
Frankie broke up the opener’s three over’s in with a pitched up delivery that popped on a length and Turnbull could do little but glove it into Hebbs new gloves and Yates were nineteen for one.
Gobby struck next over trapping Chadderton leg before for none and Blubbs had the dream start, knowing that Robinson had some work to do if Yates were to turn the game around.
Stonewall replaced Gobby and Bubba took over from Frankie as the home side put up fight back, and the tides once again turned in favour of Yates.
Bubba finally got the breakthrough removing Best for thirty two and Yates were eighty nine for three.
Another twenty five were added before Bubba struck again removing Taylor for four quickly followed by Robinson for sixty four and Blubbs were back in the driving seat.
Sherman finally came into the attack with thirty two over’s gone but the Yates number six and seven had once again tipped the scales in the home sides favour.
Winwood finally fell to a straight one from Sherman and it was one sixty nine for six and anybody’s game.
Stonewall bowled out his twelve and Frankie came back into the attack, wicket number seven went to Sherman when Townsend was caught for eight quickly followed by Law who picked up a shiny duck and Yates were wobbling on one ninety six for eight.
Two over’s to go and Yates were looking for sixteen from twelve and Blubbs looked like bagging the points, a tight over from Frankie and Sherman had to bowl the last over for less that twelve to secure the win.
Two dot balls a it was looking good for Blubbs but Wilson had other ideas, a two from the third ball, then a four, then a six and Blubbs were on the back foot once again, one to tie and two to win, captain vs captain. Sherman steam in, well more of a trundle and dug one in, Wilson struggled and only managed to "rib" the ball down into the crease but it was enough to scramble a single and the game was tied, 3 points apiece.
Middleham at home next week, an unknown entity for Blubbs to deal with and Mad Frankie’s place in doubt after he suffered a suffering a worrying shock when he thought he'd seen Dirty Doris from the bus station stalking him in the "Inn" left Sherman wondering if it was time to un box "the Brennan", the seasons well and truly underway, over and out for another week.
