Round twenty of the season and what a week, "Clash of the Titans" at the Blubberhouses Coliseum with Helperby the visitors and after a heated game in the first half of the season more fireworks were expected.
It ws a special day in the season and Shermanus Primus had managed to make Angryus Davisicus do the teas for the first time since Ceasar had left the throne. Bupa boy now out for the remainder of the season looking for Paddington bear in deepest darkest Peru meant Pepperami Man Thack was called up into the first team and Bob kept his place for the third week running.
Another wet week and rain forecast throughout the afternoon left the Blubberhouses players baffled when Sherman won the toss and decided to bat first, all that is except Winton who was happy to get a bat and try open the gap on Bubbas run total for the season to secure his little wager.
Angry and Winton got the proceedings underway and made a steady start for the homeside nurdling the ball around and picking up runs at a steady rate. The score reached fifty and disaster struck, bantering from the visitors put Angry off his shot, down went the stumps and Big Al had victim number one as the disgruntled opener trudged back to the hut with only fifteen runs to his name.
Ex-boyfriend of a girlfriend Sarah, Maximus Bubbicus entered the arena at three and looked to push the run rate up straight from the off, swishing wildly at any loose deliveries outside off stump, one swing of the willow too many, too early soon saw the end of Bubba for nought and Blubbs slumped to fifty one for two and Gobby was on his way to the middle.
More problems for Sherman nine runs later when Gobby was given leg before and Big Al had two, sixty for three and the collapse had started.
"Duck King" Dicko was next at the crease, and sixty for three soon became sixty for four and Dicko had another bird for the flock, Darnell getting another leg before decision and Blubbs were struggling.
Bungle was the new man in and put up some resistence, helping Winton move the score up towards the hundred mark with a couple of nice straight drives right from the top shelf. A brief break in play for rain was soon over and play continued with the game still forty five overs aside. A couple more runs on the board and down came the rain again, no movement from the umpires but Winton was wanting to get off the field as the rain got worse, the field got even wetter when the visiting skipper started blubbering about staying on the field but a twelve minute break in play meant the game was down to forty three overs. Seven short of the hundred and Blubbs lost wicket number five when a wild swing from Bungle saw the stumps go over again and Shermans plans for two fifty looked a long way over the horizon.
Tichie was up the order at seven this week and after a shaky start settled into building a partnership with Winton, the score passed one hundred and closed in on one fifty before a lapse in concentration saw the end of Winton, five short of his century and it was one forty four for six.
Sherman joined Tichie in the middle and after a brief stand of fourteen, thirteen coming from Tichie, Sherman was victim number three to the leg before rule and Piewalker was making his way to the middle.
The score reached one sixty six and Blubbs lost Piewalker, Tichie and Uncle Peter all in quick succession as the batting point vanished into thin air and the homesides innings came to an abrupt end, Helperby needing one sixty seven for victory from their forty three overs.
The Blubberhouses got underway with Winton, four balls into the second half and down came the rain again and off went the players, fifteen minutes later play resumed, Winton finished off the first over and Tichie Torville started the second over, a triple salco, a double axel and pirouette and Helperby were off to a flyer.
Five overs into the innings and Tichie decided enough was enough and his skates were back in the bag and Sherman was bowling from the Woodyard End in his place.
The one man team continued the onslaught of the bowling and within ten overs the visitors were already half way to victory.
Winton decided he wasn’t going to bowl anymore and Bubba came into the attack, the change failed to deliver and three overs and thirty two runs later Bubba limped off to square leg making way for Gobby.
The visitors raced past the hundred mark and Sherman tuned to Piewalker, more big hitting from Blanford CC and it was all too clear what the result was going to be, one ball short of nineteen overs and it was game, set and match to Helperby and Blubbs were fruitless from the days play, with only two games remaining for the season let’s hope Sherman can go out on a high.
